Originating on Japanese mobile phones in the late 1990s, emoji have become increasingly popular worldwide since their international inclusion in Apple's iPhone, which was followed by similar adoption by Android and other mobile operating systems. Originally meaning pictograph, the word emoji comes from Japanese e (絵, "picture") + moji (文字, "character"). The resemblance to the English words emotion and emoticon is purely coincidental.
The “Pile of Poo” emoji is a pile of poo ideogram that is shaped like a soft-serve ice cream. It is brown in color and features a friendly smile. The notion of a poo emoji was in fact highly controversial. Some believed that the notion of having an animated poo icon in their email was an offensive act, while some believed it was the design and style of the proposed poo emoji itself which was an issue. Designers ultimately embraced it and brought the poo emoji to the masses. Although it was initially animated by the hard work of programmers at Google for their Gmail platform, it is now the modern smiley poo emoji that has charmed texters and phone users for years.
