Classic Drinking Bird

The Classic Drinking Bird is a dumb-looking bird with a felt-covered head and plastic feet who can't get its fill of water and keeps drinking. Except it's really a heat engine that keeps moving with only the energy from warming and cooling!
SKU: 2637
Availability: In stock

There is more than meets the eye in the Classic Drinking Bird. At first, everything looks simple. It's a dumb-looking bird with a felt-covered head and plastic feet who can't get its fill of water and keeps drinking, perpetually thirsty. But wait! How does it keep moving without batteries or magnets of any kind?

The Classic Drinking Bird is, in fact, a heat engine that uses a thermodynamic cycle to converts heat energy into pressure differences in order to do mechanical work. What does that mean? In the simplest explanations, fluid inside condenses from the evaporative cooling of the water off the bird's beak, making it top heavy and dunking it back into the water. The condensation rejoins the liquid pool in the bird's bulb, and he tips up again.

Please beware that while the Classic Drinking Bird is very fascinating and educational to little ones, it is fragile and easily broken. The liquid inside can permanently stain, and is harmful to the skin.

Please note, this glass contained within this item is very fragile and there is a risk of damage when shipping out during the cold winter months. We advise customers to consider a delay in placing an order for this item if they do not want to risk breakage in transit due to extreme cold. Mind Games is not responsible for breakage ocuring in transit due to temperature.
